The old historic centre of Salvador de Bahia, called ‘Pelourinho‘, welcomes the visitors with its bright pastel colored colonial houses. Salvador de Bahia past is however much darker, as it was the first slave market to be established on the new continent. The name ‘Pelourinho’ itself is a remembrance of these times: it means ‘pillar‘ and indicates the square where slaves where whipped as a punishment for breaking the rules or discipline.
