The magnificent Calci Charterhouse was one of the most unexpected surprises of my trip in an overlooked area of Tuscany, the one between Pisa and Lucca. Not only had I never heard about the Charterhouse before, I also wondered how such a wonderful place could be possibly mostly known only by the locals.

Inside the Calci Charterhouse, the frescoes are jaw-dropping and the journey through the rooms of what once was a Carthusian monastery is fascinating.
