St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh

St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh

Thanks to a lovely invitation from the Sheraton Grand Hotel and Spa (an authentic treat on which I’ll write more soon) I got the chance to go back to Edinburgh and enjoy once again its impressive architecture.

St Mary’s Cathedral, whose design and decorations were inspired by the early Gothic Churches and Abbeys, is the largest in Scotland. The Cathedral, which was built between 1874 and consecrated in 1989, was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, one of the most important architects of  ‘Gothic revival’, the artistic movement that started in England in the 1840s.

How totally stunning! I adore gothic art and architecture and this is just amazing! The craftsmanship that went into this church is mind boggling – truly a lost art it today’s world. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, Lori. I love gothic art as well, its elegance. And my favorite interiors are the ones that have been preserved by the many later (often baroque or neoclassical) additions. If you get the chance, have a look at the photos of Barcelona and Orvieto Cathedrals. Cheers.
