TIERRA DEL FUEGO NATIONAL PARK

Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego National Park: My First Discovery of Patagonia Wilderness

//  by Simon//  Leave a Comment

As the flight started its descent, the excitement mounted. I would soon reach Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city also nicknamed “the end of the world.”

From my window seat, I looked in awe at the ample bay surrounded by mountains and counted the minutes.

Kitzbuehel: A Year-Round Outdoors Paradise in Tirol

//  by Simon//  1 Comment

Anyone with a passion for alpine ski competitions is familiar with the town of Kitzbuehel, in Tirol, and the Hahnenkamm – also called Streif – the most famous downhill race together with Wenger’s Lauberhorn, in Switzerland.

Alpine ski indeed remains one of the leading attractions of this famous village in the Austrian Alps, but Kitzbuehel has become over the last years a paradise for outdoors in Tirol, with plenty of activities to do across the seasons.

Hiking Vorarlberg: Nature, Culture, and Good Food in the Bregenzerwald

//  by Simon//  2 Comments

Combining the passion for mountains and walking with love for modern architecture may sound odd, even a contradiction, but that’s what you’ll experience hiking Vorarlberg, following the Architecture Path, in northwestern Austria.

This four days hike in the Bregenzerwald between mountains, green pastures, lovely villages, beautiful old houses and superb modern alpine architecture is unique. Neighboring Switzerland, Germany and the Lichtenstein Principality, the Bregenzerwald (meaning the Forest of Bregenz) is an area where old traditions blend with creativity and long-standing craftsmanship. The result is a region like no other, where there’s something for everyone.

Hiking Portofino: 3 Wonderful Trails Not to Miss on the Italian Riviera

//  by Simon//  7 Comments

Forget the Cinque Terre and go hiking Portofino!

All right, this might be a bit of an overstatement – after all, the Cinque Terre are one of the most popular destinations in Italy for international travelers – but believe me, the area of Portofino Natural Park is beautiful.
Provided that you go off-season. But this is true almost everywhere in Italy if you want to beat the crowds.

Hiking the West Highland Way, the Most Popular Trail in Scotland

//  by Simon//  8 Comments

I hadn’t planned hiking the West Highland Way, probably the most popular long-distance trail in Scotland. It just happened. And it was an amazing experience.

I knew I would go to Scotland in September to attend a conference (the STSInverness Summit) and from the beginning, I decided that it was the perfect excuse to stay a few more days. I had been to Scotland before, but only visited Edinburgh and Glasgow, both beautiful cities, and I was keen to see the wild landscapes I had admired so many times in pictures and books.

A Blissful Hike in the Charming Emmental Region

//  by Simon//  Leave a Comment

Grüzi wohl! Greetings from Napf. Today I’m hiking in the Emmental region. Yes, the area where they produce the famous Swiss cheese with the big holes.  And I’m writing in real time, sitting on the grass, surrounded by a stunning scenery: smooth hills, where the light green of the meadows blends with the darker shades of …

Hiking in Zurich: Above the Lake, up the Uetliberg mountain

//  by Simon//  Leave a Comment

From Zurich Hauptbahnhof, the main railway station, a little red train climbs up to Uetliberg, the local “mountain” overlooking the city. It might not be the Alps, but the top of the Uetliberg mountain still stands at an altitude of 871 m (2,858 ft) and is often considered Zurich’s own mountain.

After only 10 minutes the train rides across a beautiful forest, and I’m surprised at such a change only a stone throw from the largest city in Switzerland.

Mount Bromo, The Hike That Was Not

//  by Simon//  2 Comments

I love hiking. It is one of the things I enjoy doing the most. I love the physical fatigue it causes me. I don’t mind the ache in my muscles the day after a hike. I cherish the feeling of freedom, the closeness to nature and every single breath of fresh air I can gasp …
