Is Stein am Rhein One of the Most Beautiful Towns in Switzerland?

//  by Simon//  3 Comments

With little more than 3,000 inhabitants, Stein am Rhein may well be a small village but it is remarkable for the concentration of well preserved medieval buildings within such a compact area.

The jewel in the crown is the Rathausplatz – the square of the City Hall – whose entire perimeter is lined by old houses with magnificent painted façades. Every house has a different architectural structure, the subjects and colors of the murals vary, but the harmony is such that it is close to perfection.

Discovering the Remote and Beautiful Shimshal Valley [Part 2]

//  by Simon

Visiting the beautiful and remote Shimshal Valley was much more than a trip to a unique and little-known place, it was a journey into myself, it made me uncover longstanding fears, it drove me to overcome them.

I hadn’t planned to visit Shimshal, a beautiful remote valley in Gilgit Baltistan (north Pakistan). It ended up being one of the best experiences of my Pakistan adventure.

Comacchio, Simple Charm

Comacchio, Enchanting Canal Town

//  by Simon//  4 Comments

Poorly connected by public transport, out-of-the-way from the routes connecting the main towns of Emilia-Romagna, Comacchio is a little-known gem of northern Italy. The cities and towns crossed by canals are charming and picturesque, aren’t they? I’m not thinking of Venice’s uniqueness (don’t believe to characterizations like “the Venice of the north” or south or …

Cervia, The Town of Salt

//  by Simon//  Leave a Comment

Unlike many cities and towns in Italy, Cervia, as we see it today, is a rather recent settlement, dating back to the late 17th Century. Well-known as a beach resort of the Emilia-Romagna region for Summer holidays, Cervia actually has a lot of charm apart from its wide beaches. Cervia, the town of salt.  Originally …

Appenzell Colourful Houses

It’s the capital of Appenzell Innerhoden Canton, the smallest in Switzerland together with Basel City, but don’t expect a city, since Appenzell is nothing more than a town counting less than 6,000 inhabitants.  Appenzell, the town of the Landsgemeinde Appenzell is well-known for its colorful houses with painted facades and as one of the only …

A Virtual Stroll in Albi and the Tarn through Instagram

//  by Simon//  6 Comments

If you’re looking for an unusual taste of France and fancy an itinerary off the beaten track, you should put the Tarn on your radar. We’re in the land of the troubadours, who sang the value of chivalry and courtly love from the 12th to the mid 14th centuries. Here took part one of the bloodiest …

A Journey Across Shikoku, to Discover a Unique Taste of Japan

//  by Simon//  14 Comments

Having decided to spend a month in Japan, I wanted to see more than the must-see Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, and I wished to experience a different taste of Japan. I like spontaneous travel and never plan much, but I usually do some research before leaving to get an idea of the places that are ‘not-your-usual-itinerary’. …
