10 Oct The Colors of Autumn in Valais
I just spent a few days in Valais, a lovely region of Switzerland known for its beautiful mountains and the lovely vineyards.
The mountains of the Valais region are awesome at any season, but the warm colors of autumn have something special
Home to the famous Zermatt (with the iconic Matterhorn symbolizing Switzerland), Verbier and Saas-Fee mountain resorts, the Valais region is shaped by many more valleys and dotted by small villages far from the high end luxury tourism that allowed them to keep their authenticity. One of them is the Vallée d’Hérens (the Herens Valley), where Evolène was recently voted by the readers of a Swiss Magazine as the prettiest village in the French part of Switzerland.
The valley offers a wide variety of hiking and trekking trails with magnificent views on the surrounding glaciers and even if you go there by public transportation (like I did), the villages are well connected by the post bus.
One day, I went up to Arolla for a hike to the Lac Bleu (the Blue Lake), amidst the awesome colors of autumn. A couple more weeks, and the colors would have been perfect, with even more shades of orange and red. Still, I loved it.
Which is you favorite mountain season?
