A Blissful Hike in the Charming Emmental Region

//  by Simon//  Leave a Comment

Grüzi wohl! Greetings from Napf. Today I’m hiking in the Emmental region. Yes, the area where they produce the famous Swiss cheese with the big holes.  And I’m writing in real time, sitting on the grass, surrounded by a stunning scenery: smooth hills, where the light green of the meadows blends with the darker shades of …

Zurich, One of the Best Cities to Live in?

Is Zurich One of the Best Cities to Live in?

//  by Simon//  Leave a Comment

It didn’t take me long before wondering if Zurich is one of the best cities to live in. Yet, it’s not something I was expecting.
I grew up in a small mountain village in Switzerland, lived in Milan, Italy since I was eighteen and traveled quite a bit during the last 30 years. I went from a hamlet to the city and the world,

Hiking in Zurich: Above the Lake, up the Uetliberg mountain

//  by Simon//  Leave a Comment

From Zurich Hauptbahnhof, the main railway station, a little red train climbs up to Uetliberg, the local “mountain” overlooking the city. It might not be the Alps, but the top of the Uetliberg mountain still stands at an altitude of 871 m (2,858 ft) and is often considered Zurich’s own mountain.

After only 10 minutes the train rides across a beautiful forest, and I’m surprised at such a change only a stone throw from the largest city in Switzerland.

Appenzell Colourful Houses

//  by Simon//  1 Comment

It’s the capital of Appenzell Innerhoden Canton, the smallest in Switzerland together with Basel City, but don’t expect a city, since Appenzell is nothing more than a town counting less than 6,000 inhabitants.  Appenzell, the town of the Landsgemeinde Appenzell is well-known for its colorful houses with painted facades and as one of the only …

Gstaad, a Friendly Destination for Disabled People

//  by Simon//  2 Comments

One of the oldest and poshest mountain resorts in Switzerland, Gstaad is more than the gathering place for the international jet set and the high society (famous past and present residents or regular visitors include F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, actress Elizabeth Taylor, singer Madonna, as well as Prince Charles and Lady Diana).   There’s a side of Gstaad …

Frost and Fog in the Saanenland: A Photo Essay

//  by Simon//  1 Comment

Late November, early December. It’s that time of the year which I always find depressing. In Milan, the sky is gloomy more often than not and seldom brightened by a ray of sunshine. The days are short and I miss the light, which to me is like fuel. As if this weren’t enough, this year …
